The chapter
Simply Two women come to the tomb at dawn, an angel tells them he is risen, they meet him on the way, the guards are paid to say the body was stolen, and the eleven are sent to all nations.
Context The Gospel that began with a genealogy inside one people ends by sending its readers outside it, and the last sentence is a promise rather than an instruction.
Verses 1-15
Simply The two Marys come, there is an earthquake, and an angel rolls the stone away and sits on it. He tells them not to be afraid and to go. On the way Jesus meets them. Meanwhile the guards are paid to say the disciples stole the body.
Context Matthew is the only one of the four who reports the guard and the payment, which he set up in the previous chapter, and he reports it as a story that was being told when he wrote. The women are the first to be sent and the first to meet him, and the same two were the ones sitting opposite the tomb when it was closed.
Verses 16-20
Simply The eleven go to a mountain in Galilee. They bow down, and some doubt. He tells them all authority has been given to him, sends them to all nations, and says he is with them to the end of the age.
Context Matthew keeps four words most endings would drop: but some doubted, and he does not say who or what happened next. The instruction at verse 19 is the exact reverse of the one at 10:5, where the twelve were sent only to Israel, and both stand in this Gospel; a reader can open the earlier one and see the change.
