The chapter
Simply Sarai is childless and gives her Egyptian servant Hagar to Abram. Hagar conceives, the two women fall out, and Hagar runs away. She is found at a spring in the wilderness, told to go back, and given a promise about her son.
Context The chapter is hard and the file does not soften it. A woman with no say is given to a man by another woman, is treated harshly, runs, and is told to go back and submit. The text reports all of it and defends none of it, and neither does this file.
Verses 7-16
Simply An angel finds her by a spring on the way to Shur and calls her by name and by her position. She is told to return, and that her offspring will be too many to count. She names God, and the well is named after the naming.
Context Two things here are worth noticing and both are in the verses. She is the one who gives God a name at verse 13, which is not something the book has anyone else do. And the promise she is given at verse 10 is worded like the promises given to Abram, about offspring too many to count. She is an Egyptian slave and she receives both.
