  1. 1 Before anything, a Word The gospel does not begin with a birth but before everything, and only later says the Word became a person you could stand beside. Explained Read aloud
  2. 2 Six stone jars, and a whip The wine runs out at a wedding and John calls what follows the beginning of the signs; then Jesus clears the temple at Passover. Explained Read aloud
  3. 3 A teacher who comes at night Nicodemus arrives with a compliment and gets an answer he cannot follow, turning on a phrase that means both born again and born from above. Explained Read aloud
  4. 4 A drink asked for at noon At a well in Samaria a conversation about water becomes one about husbands and about where God should be worshipped. Explained Read aloud
  5. 5 Thirty-eight years, and a Sabbath A man ill for thirty-eight years is told to take up his mat and walk, and the objection is not the healing but the day. Explained Read aloud
  6. 6 Five loaves, and a hard saying Five thousand are fed and the crowd follows him across the lake; what he says next empties the room, and the editions divide over how he served the bread. Explained Read aloud
  7. 7 The crowd cannot agree He goes to the feast late and quietly, and once he teaches in the temple nobody can settle what he is: a good man, a deceiver, or the one they were waiting for. Explained Read aloud

  13. 13 A towel, and a basin At supper he gets up, ties a towel round his waist and washes their feet; Peter tries to stop him, and afterwards he explains why they must do the same. Explained Read aloud

  19. 19 The inscription, in three languages Pilate keeps trying to release him and keeps being pushed back; the title over the cross is written so everyone can read it. Explained Read aloud
  20. 20 Mistaken for the gardener Mary finds the tomb open before dawn; two disciples race to it, and she stays behind crying until he says her name. Explained Read aloud
